Limits on land ownership and distributed surplus land to the landless brought down to a great extent economic, class and caste inequality in Kerala society and became the backbone of what was later known as the Kerala model of development. But over three decades later, as a direct consequence of the land reforms, the State (which has a very high population density) finds itself facing the prospect of extreme fragmentation of landholdings and the consequent decline in farm production. There has also been a gradual shift in land ownership from households that have a livelihood interest in agriculture to those that have no major interest in cultivation and basically consider land as an additional source of income, if at all. The policy of tenement demolition is now considered to have been short-sighted, wasteful and largely unsuccessful. Many of Glasgow's worst tenements were refurbished into desirable accommodation in the 1970s and 1980s and the policy of demolition is considered to have destroyed many fine examples of a "universally admired architectural" style.
The tenements were breeding grounds for outlaws, juvenile delinquents, and organized crime. A variation to the usual construction of Apartment Tripunithura is the "L-shaped" or "alcove" studio, in which the central room branches off into a small alcove that can be used for sleeping or dining. Some manufactured housing corporation, incorporated studio apartments into some of their communities. There are two major categories of real estate development activity: land development and building development. Extended stay concept is steadily spreading throughout India due to increase in the number of travelers and business people visiting every year. Tenement was built, housing mainly poor immigrants. More tenements followed suit. Near the 1860s, tenement squares were popping up quite frequently.
